The Crown of the Aged

Recently I became a grandma. This happened, interestingly enough, on National Grandparents Day. I am amazed at how I have looked forward to my grandchild’s birth, and how much I love her already. Being new at this, I decided I better look into what Scripture has to say about being a grandparent. Proverbs 17:6a says, “Grandchildren are the crown of the aged.” I am feeling more “aged” every day, but seeing my family grow does seem like a kind of reward and treasure.

Another verse, Deuteronomy 4:9, was eye opening. In it, Moses was speaking to the people of Israel before they enter the Promised Land and he said,          “Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children.”

I have regretted in the past not sharing more about my walk with the Lord with my children when they were young. I tried to teach them about how much God loves them, how he came to earth and died for their sin, how he rose again, and how he wants them to know and have a relationship with him. But, I think now that it would have been so good for them to also hear more about the specific things he has done in my life and how he answered prayer.

By sharing what God has done and is doing in our lives with others, especially our children and grandchildren, we lift them up and strengthen their faith. Along with them, we too are blessed because this is a way to “take care and keep our souls diligently,” and it keeps us from forgetting and letting these things “depart” from our own hearts. I look forward to being a grandma who openly shares what God has done and is doing, continuing to grow even in her old age.
